Upcoming Films Scores is reporting that James Newton Howard will be scoring The Last Airbender!
The Gorfaine-Schwartz Agency has added The Last Airbender to James Newton Howard’s filmography. This is M. Night Shyamalan’s new film, which is expected to premiere in the summer of 2010. It is the seventh feature film collaboration between Howard and Shyamalan, previous projects include The Sixth Sense, Signs, Unbreakable and this year’s The Happening. The epic fantasy adventure follows the adventures of the successor to a long line of Avatars who must put aside his irresponsible ways and stop the Fire Nation from enslaving the Water, Earth and Air nations. Paramount will distribute. James Newton Howard has several films coming up shortly: Defiance (already nominated for a Golden Globe), Love Ranch, Confessions of a Shopaholic and Duplicity.
Hopefully Howard will be using some of The Track Team’s themes in this score. Watching Avatar without The Track Team’s music would be like watching Star Wars without John Williams’ iconic themes (hint: it doesn’t work, ex: The Clone Wars film).

Collider.com has an exclusive video interview with The Last Airbender producer, Frank Marshall! An interesting point from the interview is that they are “committed” to three films like they were committed to making three Indiana Jones films. He also mentions that they’ll be filming in Philadelphia, Greenland, and the Far East. Filming is scheduled to begin in March 2009, with the film to be released late 2010, or early 2011. Looks like that July 2, 2010 release date isn’t so solid anymore.

Okay, so not everyone is exactly thrilled with Mr. Shyamalan’s casting decisions thus far. While this Avatar fan is far more concerned with whether or not these young people can act their way out of a wet paper bag, it seems that a group of fans led by aang_aint_white are mobilizing a letter writing campaign to the powers that be at Paramount Pictures voicing their opposition to the “whitewashed” cast. They have provided an example letter, tips for letter writing, and the address that the letters should be mailed to.
Will you take up the call to save the world…with postage?

According to EW.com, Shyamalan has assembled the Gaang!
M. Night Shyamalan has found the cast for The Last Airbender, his upcoming live-action film based on the popular anime-inspired Nickelodeon series. The youthful group is mostly filled with unknowns who are likely to be household names by the time Paramount opens the first in its potential three-film franchise in July 2010. After an open casting call in Texas, Shyamalan discovered karate star Noah Ringer and offered him the part of Airbender’s 12-year old hero, Aang, an Avatar with superpowers who must stop the Fire Nation from destroying the world. Twilight‘s Jackson Rathbone has been asked to play Aang’s pal Sokka, while Nicola Peltz (Deck the Halls) will star as his sister Katara. Genial singer Jesse McCartney, meanwhile, is negotiating to play against type in the role of the Fire Nation’s evil prince Zuko.
