Aasif Mandvi will take on the role of the evil Fire Nation Commander Zhao.

The Dragon of the West has a face! Shaun Toub has been cast as the wise, kind, and powerful Uncle Iroh.

Cliff Curtis will portray Fire Lord Ozai!
Keong Sim has also been cast as a as yet unnamed Earthbending father.
Principal photography is set to begin mid-March 2009!

iroh is supposed to be fat n short not skinny n bald
ozai is supposed to be built
n i can see how hard it will be to get the evil/sinister look from ozai’s casting and zhao’s casting
i hope this won’t become like dragonball evolution where it became so bad
no offense, but since everyones talking about racism, its like m night shyalaman just brought his family for the roles of the characters…

i agree with what bob has to say..i was shocked to see a slim iroh instead of a fat wise one..
and pardon me, the characters are all so indian..no offense..i think avatar community will agree if ill say we need asians..(japanese. chinese, mongolians ) does nicola had a screen shot already of her role as katara??

I agree with the previous posts, the characters are suppose to be asian.
And partly why I loved Uncled Iroh was because he was fluffy and an easily loved character.
This sucks!

To be fair, Toub is British and ethnically Persion, not Indian.
But yeah, this seems casting very much against the original character.

to be quite honest, they had to cast zuko iroh and ozai in the same ethnicity coz theyre related, and theyre from the same country as zhao

Actually, what’s funny is that Curtis is a New Zealander. So none of these actors are even close ethnically. Plus Toub has had his mentor roles. I think a good fat suit could help him…
Personally, I always saw a South Asian Fire Nation coming.

Dev Patel and Cliff Curtis look like they could be son and father.

Noah Ringer looks really young to be playing the avatar. I mean I don’t know how old this kid is, also the costume of the avatar makes Noah look a little bit chubby.

to respond to the whole “racism” issue shyamalan changed the ethnicity so it would have more diversity than just Chines. i mean lets face it not everyone can be chinese. i think the made the earth kingdom Chinese’ fire nation Indian, water tride Caucasian, and air nomads eupropean or something idk. so i think people need to stop saying its racist and actually think about what hes trying to do

stratisfire -> Caucasian = European

As for the cast – I liked them all instantly except for Toub/Iroh.
However after careful consideration I believe he could make a good Iroh with appropriate make-up. The Iroh beard will make the face look far broader (and it would be easy to use said beard to conceal latexfoam or silicone parts that make the chin and jaw broader in addition).
His eyes and the area around them work very well for Iroh, hair never is a problem, nor is the body, as good “fat suits” look very realistic.

I face-palmed so hard that my desk shook .__.
I loved Uncle Iroh, he was my ideal grandfather! Fat, wise, and caring. This casting has caused a huge uproar from AtLA fans… I hope they fix it up soon, otherwise it’ll end up failing just as bad as the Dragon Ball Z live-action.
To statisfire, the Avatar populations aren’t just “Chinese”. There are tons of influences from the Inuit, Korean, Japanese, Tibetan, & other cultures. Not being racist or anything, but the only “Indian-looking” guy i saw in the cartoon series is the Guru.
Oh Iroh
