Those sparkling vampires, and buff werewolves of the Twilight saga may be the biggest hurdle The Last Airbender will have to overcome to reach box office success next year. New Moon, the second of the Twilight films, opened this past weekend grossing an astonishing $142 million, smashing the highest grossing Midnight opening and single day records in the process. The next film in the saga, Eclipse, opens next year on June 30, a mere two days before The Last Airbender hits theaters. What the wild success of New Moon spells for The Last Airbender at this point is uncertain, but it wouldn’t surprise us if Airbender’s release date is pushed up or back at least a week in light of the very real competition Eclipse will surely bring to the box office.

Hi, I’m from Brazil, and I love the animated series. I hope this Twilight thing don’t scrude the big opening. Maybe a previously opening is the solution. Thanks!

Maybe by then all the little girlies will realise that TWILIGHT is nothing but empty pseudo-vamp bilge and not worth their time or money. Not least for the dubious charms of a ‘VINO’ (Vampire In Name Only).
Whereas AVATAR: THE LAST AIRBENDER is not only the greatest animated action series of all time, but it has genuinely smart and powerful female characters that would be an inspiration to any young woman out there.

I love twilight AND TLA so don’t lable us “girlies” and i going to see both, bich.

Well, even though I absolutely LOVE avatar, I have to admit that in order for it to do well on th box office it HAS to be moved out of Eclipse’s way. I mean, after all it IS the twilight saga we’re taling about, it has a huge fan base, and I’m afraid it might be bigger than our own. So yeah, who knows.

Pushing it up is the best option, I think.
Pushing it back will just make it harder to get a foothold. Besides, opening mid-June means that all the kids who wanna see it are JUST getting out of school…with nothing to do for their first week of vacation.

I suggest they just push the release up

Okey
so i did went to see New Moon (hell no on the opening night) but if i had to chose between ATLA and twilight it sure as hell is ATLA. Anyway i’m from Belgium and i hope it won’t won’t move to much ’cause i’ve got my exams in June and July.

I agree with ColinJ. I was planning on seeing New Moon just to make fun of it, but I’d really rather not waste the money now. The Last Airbender will be a million times better!

Airbender’s best chance of survival is with a heavy marketing campaign. All these twitards can have their sparkly-vampire-fags movie, those of us that aren’t tools can have our most excellent film adventure (XD Bill and Ted). I think that moving it toward the next holiday season would be a smart idea, because chances are that this, being a family movie, will attract more families than just teenage nerds or adult nerds and whatnot, so more families will make it an event to go see it around a family gathering such as Christmas or so. And I garuntee you, they’ll be marketing this towards the kids, no matter how mature the film is, being that it’s based on a cartoon that targeted kids, so it’s more than likely going to have a more kid-friendly box office turnout.
Let’s just hope against another box office and marketing disaster like DBE or Astroboy (the latter of which was AMAZING and I was disappointed that it didn’t get more exposure).

ahaha. Push that sh*t forward, dont push it back because people will still be clawing their ways through lines to go to the movies a week after the first showing of Eclipse.
Theyre hyping it up already and, believe or not, but New Moon gained a lot of respect from male viewers; Eclipse is going to double that with the way theyre talking up the darkness and the amount of fight scenes in the movie.
The fan base isnt going anywhere, its going to grow so im just hoping TLA will be out BEFORE Eclipse.

Wow! This is really bad for ATLA, I mean, Twilight (disgusting and disturbing as it may be) has a HUGE fanbase, and if THIS ATLA movie doesn’t do well, then they most likely wont make the rest of the trilogy– Which means no Toph, earthbending fans, and no Azula, firebending fans.
I’ve been looking forward to this ATLA movie– It will give publicity to the cartoon, will promote future episodes in the cartoon itself, and will in the process give us Avatar Fans something to experience while waiting for them to continue the series. Think of this not as a “live action version”, but rather as what avatar would be like if it were in our realm of reality. This isn’t supposed to copy the movie exactly, but rather be its own dimension of Avatar.

oops, when I said “Copy the movie exactly” I meant to say “Copy the SERIES exactly”. Sorry for any confusion!

Ha yeah we thought the same about Dragon Ball Evolution.
it did so bad we thought there wasn’t even a chance for another; now the script for the next is already done.
if the first movie doesn’t do well there is still a possibility for another.

I hope they push it up!! Just because waiting for June to see it seems like FOREVER!! I am a Twilight fan too but I would much rather pay my $8 for Airbender then Eclipse, although I’m sure it’s gonna stand true that the book is better than the movie, the series is gonna be better than the movie, more time to focus on the character development and the humor and side stories we all love so much!
all hail Avatards!

Stupid Eclipse, Why can’t they just have movies every year, not every 6 months. >_>
November 30, 2009 at 3:00 am |
Ok everyone: go see the movie at midnight so we can smash Twilight’s “record” into the ground. Avatar is ten times better and we can totally beat $142 million.
December 1, 2009 at 12:30 am |
I think it should be moved also because I have been waiting for this movie for a long time and even though I’m a fan of the Twilight saga too I don’t want to see the Avatar movie to get forgotten about because of Eclipse. I think the whole Twilight thing is starting to get too crazy anyway. Avatar is so much better than Twilight and some people don’t even know about it and might not get a chance if the date isn’t moved.

Even if they are two days apart from eachother I’m going to see both
Team Avatar!!!
December 1, 2009 at 11:16 pm |
Yeah, Twilight’s just stupid. What’s so cool about a girl falling in love with a vampire? The plot design (and everything else) about Avatar is just so much better!!!! I really hope it turns out as awesome and epic as Lord of the Rings!!!!!
December 1, 2009 at 11:18 pm |
Oh, and sorry to any Twilight fans out there!!!!!
December 3, 2009 at 2:04 am |
Okay, I love both ATLA and the Twilight Saga. But there is absolutely no question on which will do the best if they are released so closely together. Twilight’s fan base is much larger, and to whoever it was above who said everyone should go at the midnight release. I think that’s a good idea, and maybe if ATLA isn’t pushed up, it may make a small difference, it won’t beat Eclipse but it may give it a good run for it’s money.
And yeah, ColinJ, we’re not all ‘little girlies’ thank you very much >:(
December 3, 2009 at 2:05 am |
Pssh. TLA budget is $250 million. Eclipse is $142 million.
TLA will kick Eclipse’ sparkly vampire butt.
December 10, 2009 at 5:19 pm |
Well, I don’t actaully think Twilight’s stupid, (the books anyway) but I watched the first movie and it was awful, in my opinion. Once again, sorry to anybody who liked the movies!!!
December 10, 2009 at 5:19 pm |
I CAN’T WAIT FOR THE LAST AIRBENDER TO COME OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
December 28, 2009 at 6:37 pm |
Hah!! I’m sure Aang can take those stupid vamps. Sorry to anyone who likes those movies, they’re not my favorite. I’ve been waiting for the day when the “Gaang” would return! Although, I do, sadly, admit that the Twilight craze could do some damage to our movie..so the only options are to release it early, or wait until the craziness from Eclipse has died down to release it. /:

I think that the movie should be pushed forward. I know, I know, I don’t want to wait any longer either, but really, since the fan girls of Twilight are gonna squeal their hearts out for a solid two months before the movie comes out, I think that the studios should just let all the fangirls get Twilight out of their system, and release TLA a month or two afterwards.
By then, people will be sick of Eclipse and the hype and desperate for something better. Harry Potter moved their release date (for the HBP) when they found out that New Moon was planning on releasing in the same month. Just stay out of the fangirls’ way and success will be had.
