Also, it's also just known as "Crouching Stance" but would be used for more stance training to open up the kwa (just think of it as training your legs for strength and flexibility. That's kind of an elementary explanation but will serve here :) ).

Actually, we do have a stance like that but it's more of a transition movement sometimes translated as "Swallow Skims the Water". But that's not quite it. The movement involves diving down for a low attack then coming back up using the inertia of the thrust in some usages.

However, I think this is just a case of "Movie Kung-Fu" and they wanted something cool looking. As a BGZ practitioner, I'm happy it's going to be represented but I'm also doubting it's accuracy. They hired a Tae Kwon Do guy to play the part (the arts are like night and day) and the fight choreographer doesn't seem to have any credentials in this style. Whereas in the tv show, they actually worked very hard to have each art represented accurately (barring firing elements out of your hands and such ;P).

Oh well.

It might be photoshopped, no-one can tell. But it still looks alright, though slightly fake.

From a baguazhang/airbending perspective, a stance like that would never be used. Bagua is based on movement and evasion, and a low stance prevents that. It looks more like a firebending/shaolin stance. The only way I can interpret the picture is that Aang has nowhere to run, and is preparing for a huge burst of air. Or something.

I have to say, the stills and posters we've gotten for this movie look stunning, and very much in the spirit of the series. I'm still cautious about the final product (many a rousing trailer has resulted in a disappointing movie) but if nothing else, it definitely seems that M. Night "gets" Avatar on a visual level.
