Nickelodeon has officially announced that a sequel to the critically acclaimed “Avatar: The Last Airbender” is the works! From the creator-producers of “Avatar: The Last Airbender,” “The Legend of Korra” (tentatively titled) animated series is slated to premiere in 2011. According to Nickelodeon executive Brown Johnson, the new series will follow the adventures of a teenage Water Tribe girl avatar named Korra (pictured above presumably), described as a independent hothead “ready to take on the world.”

NICKELODEON GREENLIGHTS NEW SERIES
FROM THE CREATORS OF THE ANIMATED TELEVISION HIT
AVATAR: THE LAST AIRBENDER
Series Creators Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko
Bring Fans a New Adventure in the Avatar World The Legend of Korra
BURBANK, Calif. – July 21, 2010 – Nickelodeon, the number one producer of television animation in the world, has greenlit a new series from the creators of the hit animated TV show Avatar: The Last Airbender, it was announced today by Brown Johnson, President, Animation, Nickelodeon and MTVN Kids and Family Group. The new series The Legend of Korra (working title), from creators Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, will premiere on Nickelodeon in 2011, continuing the evolution of the animated franchise and its mythology. The original series was the inspiration for the Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies live-action epic adventure, The Last Airbender, which has already grossed more than $115 million at the box office to date.
“Mike and Bryan have imagined a compelling new story inspired by the Airbender mythology that they so brilliantly crafted when the TV series began,” Johnson said. “This new avatar is not only a girl, but also hot-headed, independent and ready to take on the world.”
The Legend of Korra takes place 70 years after the events of Avatar: The Last Airbender and follows the adventures of the Avatar after Aang – a passionate, rebellious, and fearless teenaged girl from the Southern Water Tribe named Korra. With three of the four elements under her belt (Earth, Water, and Fire), Korra seeks to master the final element, Air. Her quest leads her to the epicenter of the modern “Avatar” world, Republic City – a metropolis that is fueled by steampunk technology. It is a virtual melting pot where benders and non-benders from all nations live and thrive. However, Korra discovers that Republic City is plagued by crime as well as a growing anti-bending revolution that threatens to rip it apart. Under the tutelage of Aang’s son, Tenzin, Korra begins her airbending training while dealing with the dangers at large.
Launched in February 2005, Avatar aired for three seasons on Nickelodeon and was ranked among the top five animated properties on television among boys, 2-11 and 6-11 (2005/2006). During this time, the series reached a total of 21.7 million total viewers (persons 2+), including 8.8 million kids 2-11 and 6.3 million kids 6-11*. Currently, Avatar: The Last Airbender is the number one program on Nicktoons among tweens. (Source: *Nielsen Cume Data – July 2008, Live + 7 day, 6 min. qualifier.)
Avatar: The Last Airbender was created and executive produced by Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko.
An award-winning filmmaker, DiMartino was a director at Film Roman for six years, working on the prime-time animated series King of the Hill, Family Guy and Mission Hill. During his tenure there, DiMartino animated and directed the short animated film Atomic Love, which has gone on to screen at festivals across the country including Sundance and the Los Angeles Film Festival. It also aired as part of the Nicktoons Network Animation Festival.

Konietzko began his career in animation as a character designer at Film Roman for Fox’s prime-time series, Family Guy. He soon moved to the post of assistant director for two more Film Roman shows, Mission Hill and King of the Hill, working beside animation director DiMartino. Konietzko then became a storyboard artist and later an art director for the Nickelodeon animated series Invader Zim.
The new Avatar series will be produced at the Nickelodeon Animation Studios in Burbank, Calif., and is co-executive produced by Joaquim Dos Santos.

OMG. I have been waiting for more LAST AIRBENDER! That was the greatest series in the world! I guess I will grow on this one too. Is Korra one of the Avatars before or after Aang? She looks Water Tribe. 2011 is the year. Well, during the wait, The Clone Wars Season 3 is on. If Korra was after Aang, they should really show what happened to him. I just hope it’s not sad. I wonder if they will still use some of the same spirits?
Yeah!
July 21, 2010 at 11:32 am |
She’s got to be after Aang. Water is after Air. It’s the “SEQUEL”. Aaww. I will miss Katara, TOPH!, Aang and Sokka. Oh, and Appa and MoMo. I bet there will be 2 or 3 more Airbenders. Aang and Katara could have had kids. Anyone born Air Nomads is an Airbender.

I love your name TophFan990011 she was my favorite character and i was hoping that since the piece of crap movie came out they would start the same show back up again. Just wondering why isn’t it called Avatar: The Legend of Korra?
July 23, 2010 at 9:58 am |
Well in britain I think the title of Avatar: The Last Airbender was Avatar: The Legend of Aang no?
July 21, 2010 at 1:14 pm |
I’m so excited!!!! I will miss the old gang, but I hope it still shows them in the past (Older) ahhhhh I can’t wait!!!!
July 21, 2010 at 1:39 pm |
YES!!! Finally, a sequel! And for those of you curious, I looked this up and found some neat tidbits. Aang had a child alright, a SON in fact who’s an airbender. But I wonder what happened to Aang? makes me very ansty, personally. It’s kinda funny if you think about it. Aang went from light-heart and carefree to hot-headed waterbender who already knows most likely by now how to Earthbend and Firebend. That leaves Airbending. And if my instinct is right, we’ll see more of Aang sense if it like before then Aang will be Kora’s Avatar Guide.

i so hope ang shows up as her guide!!! that would be so awesome …sorry im really excited haha

though i am a bit upset that toph isnt gonna be in it she was my fave character *sighs* May be im gonna find some other blind short earth bender to love in this series X3….probably not lol
July 25, 2010 at 5:00 pm |
i read theres gonna be a character named meelo, which might be a grandson of sokka and suki, and a character named wei bei which might be related to toph because his name has bei in it which is part of tophs last name bei fong. In the show korra knows water earth and fire already she is from the southern water tribe which was rebuilt. The air temples have been rebuilt and so has basing sei. But korra needs to learn air bending so she goes to this mysterious republic city where she finds tnzin which is aang and kataras air bending son to teach her airbending. But the city is corupted with non benders who are trying to take over the city, and its supposed to be darker than the old show but still have that goofy feel

July 30, 2010 at 2:17 pm |
From what i have read so far she knows 3 elements thats CRAP. the story should be from her finding out that shes the avatar to learning each individual element and finally defeating the evil ruler of the republic city

holy SHIT OMG I AM SO HAPPY ANNG MARRIES KATARA, SUKIAND SOKKA, (toph by herself…
) other then that I AM SITTING ON MY RECLINER and wait till THE NEW YEAR BALLS DROP! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT
November 18, 2010 at 11:45 pm |
aang and katara get in bed together and do eachother (luckily), and the have a baby son. tenzin. and he is the guide to korra. aang unfortunatley cant be korra’s guide because when an avatar dies, a new one is reborn. appa is an air biesen, which live for hundreds of years, and the air biesen was the first master of air bending. so appa could possibly teach korra aswell as tenzin. there is also a chance the old gang and momo couldve survived, when aang was on his deathbed, he couldve frozen katara and his friends so that later in the future they could be unfrozen just like aang was in the beginning of the last airbender.
